HOW TO PREPARE
SPEAKERS
The Sustainable Solutions Summit (SSS) is a one-day student-run symposium that aims to spark thoughtful dialogue among Houston youth about the intersection between goals of economic development and environmental conservation. In pursuit of a sustainable future, we believe that the two priorities ought not be regarded as mutually exclusive. The Sustainable Solutions Summit is the perfect opportunity for youth to explore local manifestations of global issues.
Our goal is to engage and inform. This is a highly interdisciplinary event that will begin with a speaker series lead by professionals ranging from academia, to business sectors, to local civic leaders in order to ensure the diversity of perspectives. In the afternoon, students will participate in policy simulations to engage in rigorous discussions and form resolutions on topics relating to the SSS themes. We hope that all students will leave the symposium with a heightened understanding of global issues especially in regards to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through our morning speaker series with local leaders, we also examine how global issues are explored at the local level.

Nuance is our discussion motto. Interdisciplinary engagement is our guiding principle. Cooperation is our end goal--and Goal #17 of the UN SDGs.
ā
Attendance is 100% free, however lunch is not free of cost. Outstanding MUN policy simulation participants will receive awards in the closing ceremony.
ā
Aside from diversity of perspective, we strive to promote an interdisciplinary outlook on energy and urban sustainability with a focus on the dynamics of the tension between balancing economic & human development and environmental conservation. We believe that cross-sector, cross-discipline dialogue on global issues is necessary for progress in the future of sustainability. In the afternoon, students will have the opportunity to actively engage in discussion and debate over international sustainability issues in Model United Nations style committee sessions. At the end of the sessions, students would have completed a collaborative resolution writing process.

Please read the policy simulation background guides and prepare a brief <1 page position statement for the country you are assigned to for the afternoon simulations.
The most important thing is to bring an open mind!
